bowl of fresh green beansNovember is National Diabetes Month, an important time to raise awareness about this growing disease and help more Americans manage their risk. A leading cause of disability and death, diabetes has become a health crisis in our country. Blindness, nerve damage, and kidney disease are just a few of the health problems it can cause when not kept under control.1

There are now 30.3 million Americans who have diabetes.2 Of these, 23.8% are undiagnosed.3

The good news is that people who are at high risk for type 2 diabetes may be able to reduce their risk by more than half by eating better and being more physically active.4

We want to help you reach your goals. Take a look at our ideas for little changes to practice daily that can make a big difference in the long run.5

Small Steps, Big Strides

While making changes to your eating habits may seem difficult, it’s not so overwhelming if you take small steps throughout the day.

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Smarter snacking. When you open the fridge for a snack, replace the chips and dip with hummus, carrots, and whole grain crackers. Or try these snack solutions.

Wiser holiday choices. With Thanksgiving and the holidays just around the corner, make subtle shifts in your menu to cut down on sugar and saturated fat, and add more nutrients, with these tasty recipes.

Reliable recipes. Check out our Better Choice, Heart Smart, and Carb Smart recipes and incorporate them into your weekly menu.

With each smart food choice you make, you’ll move closer to a balanced diet and help manage your risk of diabetes.

Are You at Risk?

Publix can help you assess your risk for diabetes.

Know your numbers. Be sure to get regular health screenings at the Publix Pharmacy, and follow up with your physician. At each health screening, you’ll find out your blood pressure, cholesterol levels, glucose (blood sugar) levels, and body mass index (BMI).
