Make yourself comfortable.
You don't have to buy the latest flashy model of running shoes, but you do need to invest in proper footwear. Purchase a good pair of running shoes designed for your arch and stride. If you're not sure which type of shoe you need, visit a local running specialty store to get fitted properly.
Other gear that will make running more comfortable includes a shirt made of wicking fabric, as that helps pull the sweat away from your body and dries faster than cotton. You may also need a comfortable pair of shorts and a good pair of wicking socks. Women may need a supportive and comfortable sports bra. Try selecting clothes that don't ride up or chafe when you run. Don’t try any completely new gear on race day. Stick with your tried-and-true favorites.
