Sticking to your health goals is challenging enough—now try doing it on a budget. You can do this! We can help.
Start by following our series of tips to use before, during, and after your shopping trip. You may find more green in your wallet and diet.
Before your shopping trip.
- Take stock. Check your freezer, pantry, and refrigerator to see what you already have. You may not need as much as you thought. If you take inventory of your kitchen, you can use ingredients you might have forgotten and avoid repurchasing items you already have.
- Plan for success. Carve out time to make your weekly meal plan and grocery list with My Shopping List. Planning makes budgeting easier and helps to avoid impulse buys. We have recipes to fit most dietary needs. Choose your interest using the diet and nutrition filters on the left side of the page. For an in-depth look at our different dietary criteria, use these charts to learn about calories, fat, sodium, and fiber amounts. We recommend the Publix Aprons recipe for Cowboy Chicken and Rice. It’s our Better Choice, Carb Smart, and Heart Smart recipe for September.
- So many ways to save. While planning your meals and shopping list, check out our weekly ad, digital coupons, extra savings, and other deals at publix.com/savings.
During your shopping trip.
- Stock up and save on sales. Plan your meals around what’s on sale, including specials and BOGOs. Purchase large quantities of sale items, like meat, and freeze some for later, prepare multiple meals, or enjoy plenty of leftovers.
- Do the math. Use the unit price located on the shelf tag when comparing products of various sizes. Most foods are priced per ounce. Yogurt, for example, is usually cheaper per ounce than per individual cup. Make sure you can eat it all before it goes bad.
- Private label power. Our brands include Publix, Publix Premium, and GreenWise. They usually cost less than national brands, with quality you can trust.
- Load up on produce. Look for items at the peak of their season. They’re abundant and usually sold at a lower price.
- Chill out. Canned and frozen fruits and vegetables are picked at peak freshness and are often just as nutritious as fresh. Be sure to look for Better Choice shelf tags to select vegetables without added sodium and fruits without added sugar.
After your shopping trip.
- Enjoy now. Enjoy later. Batch cook items like dried beans and whole grains (for example, brown rice and whole wheat pasta) to get you through the week. Find more tips about whole grains here. Find tips for cooking dried beans from scratch here.
- Go meatless. Meat can take a large cut from your food budget. Try a meal without it once a week. Our Spicy White Bean and Broccoli Stew with canned white beans, broccoli, and frozen vegetables is a tasty alternative.
- Don’t waste. Wasted food is wasted money. Get tips on how to reduce the amount of food wasted in your home.
