Ingredients
For mint syrup
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons fresh mint leaves
For drink
- ⅓ cup mint syrup
- 2 cups ruby red (or pink) grapefruit juice
- ¾ cup whiskey
- 4 dashes bitters
- 1 cup chilled sparkling wine
- 4 grapefruit segments (optional for garnish)
Steps
- Make mint syrup. Combine water and sugar in small saucepan on medium-high. Bring to a boil, stirring until sugar is dissolved. Pour warm syrup over mint leaves in small bowl. Let steep 30 minutes or until cool. Remove and discard mint leaves. Cover syrup and chill at least 2 hours (or up to 2 weeks).
- Make drink. Fill cocktail shaker with ice; add mint syrup, grapefruit juice, whiskey, and bitters.
- Shake well and strain into ice-filled highball glasses; top with sparkling wine.
- Garnish with grapefruit segments, if desired.
Other Preparation Methods
Not a fan of whiskey?
Substitute vodka for the whiskey and basil for the mint.
