Ingredients
- 1 small onion
- 2 cloves garlic
- 2 lemons
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
- 1 cup ketchup
- ¼ cup packed light brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 2 teaspoons chili powder
- 1 teaspoon ground red pepper (optional)
Steps
- Coarsely chop onion; mince garlic. Juice lemons (¼ cup). Preheat large saucepan on medium 2–3 minutes. Add butter and melt; add onion and cook 2–3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until tender. Add garlic; cook 1 more minute.
- Reduce heat to low; stir in lemon juice and remaining ingredients. Bring to a simmer and cook 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until sauce has slightly thickened. Remove pan from heat and set aside to cool. Place in an airtight container and refrigerate up to 2 weeks. (Makes about 1 ½ cups.)
