Sticky Bun French Toast

Ingredients

  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup dark brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons dark corn syrup
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ cup pecan pieces
  • Cooking spray
  • 1 (14 oz) loaf Bakery brioche bread
  • 5 large eggs (or 1 ¼ cups egg substitute)
  • 1 ½ cups half-and-half
  • 1 teaspoon orange extract (or liqueur)
  • Aluminum foil

Steps

    1. Melt butter in medium saucepan on medium, then add brown sugar, corn syrup, and salt; cook and stir 2–3 minutes until sugar dissolves and mixture thickens. Remove from heat and stir in pecans.
    2. Coat deep, 9-inch square baking dish with spray; pour sugar mixture into dish. Trim ends from bread, then cut loaf into 4 equal slices; arrange bread cut-side down in dish.
    3. Whisk eggs, half-and-half, and orange extract, then pour mixture over bread in dish. Cover with foil; chill 2 hours (or overnight).
    4. Remove dish from refrigerator; preheat oven to 350°F. Bake 30 minutes, then remove foil and bake 10 more minutes or until center is set and 160°F. Let stand 5 minutes to cool, then carefully invert onto serving dish. Serve.
Other Preparation Methods
    • Snack: Preheat medium, nonstick sauté pan 2–3 minutes on medium. Coat 1 side of 4 (1-inch-thick) slices Bakery Brioche bread with softened butter. Coat other sides with whipped cream cheese and strawberry jam. Put together to make 2 butter-side-out sandwiches. Cook 3–4 minutes on each side until golden.
    • Side: Preheat oven to 350°F. Cut 1 (14 oz) loaf Bakery Brioche bread into 1-inch cubes; bake 8–10 minutes until toasted, then combine with 4 cups chicken broth, 8 oz trinity mix, and 1 lb crumbled cooked sausage. Bake 30–40 minutes until center is set and top is golden.
