Ingredients
- ½ cup unsalted butter
- 3 navel oranges, for zest/juice & wedges
- ⅓ cup brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon dried sage
- 1 teaspoon + 1 tablespoon smokehouse maple seasoning, divided
- 1 (10–12 lb) fresh whole turkey
- ½ cup maple syrup
Steps
- Preheat oven to 325°F. Set butter out to soften. Zest 1 orange (1 teaspoon), then juice (⅓ cup). Cut remaining 2 oranges in half, then place in roasting pan. Combine orange zest, butter, brown sugar, sage, and 1 teaspoon maple seasoning.
- Season turkey with remaining 1 tablespoon maple seasoning. Slip fingers between skin and meat of the turkey breast to loosen skin. Lift skin and carefully use a spatula (or fingers) to spread one-half brown sugar mixture directly onto breasts. Arrange turkey breast-side up over oranges (wash hands); bake 1 ½ hours.
- Place maple syrup, orange juice, and remaining half butter mixture in small saucepan on medium; cook and stir 2–3 minutes until sugar dissolves. Baste turkey with glaze; bake 30–60 more minutes until turkey is 165°F. Let turkey stand 10 minutes before slicing. Serve.
