Ingredients
- 4 cups water
- 4 tablespoons white vinegar
- 4 cups red cabbage (for blue dye), coarsely chopped
- 12 hard-boiled eggs
Steps
- Bring water and vinegar to a boil. Chop cabbage.
- Stir cabbage into boiling water. Reduce heat to medium-low; simmer 15 minutes. Strain liquid into large bowl; chill 30 minutes or until completely cooled (vegetables can be eaten or discarded).
- Place dye in tall glass (or keep in large bowl); add eggs and submerge completely. Let stand 15–20 minutes (or overnight) to develop depth of color desired. Let air dry.
Yellow: Prepare dye using 4 tablespoons ground turmeric instead of cabbage.
Gold: Prepare dye using 2 (0.5-oz) packages saffron threads instead of cabbage.
Tan/Brown: Prepare dye using 4 tablespoons instant coffee instead of cabbage.
