    Ingredients

    • 1 cup pitted dates, chopped
    • ½ cup shallots, chopped
    • 2 teaspoons garlic, chopped
    • 2 (15.8-oz) cans reduced-sodium white beans
    • 1 teaspoon extra-virgin olive oil
    • 2 teaspoons chili powder
    • ⅛ teaspoon cinnamon
    • ⅛ teaspoon ground red pepper (optional)
    • 2 (8-oz) cans tomato sauce
    • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
    • 1 tablespoon ground flax seed
    • 1 tablespoon honey
    • 4 links mild Italian chicken sausage

    Prep

      • Preheat oven to 400°F; preheat grill.
      • Chop dates, shallots, and garlic. Drain beans (do not rinse).

    Steps

      1. Preheat small saucepot on medium 1–2 minutes. Place in saucepot: oil, shallots, garlic, chili powder, cinnamon, and red pepper; cook 2–3 minutes or until very fragrant. Stir in dates, tomato sauce, and tomato paste; reduce heat and simmer 8–10 minutes or until dates are tender.
      2. Stir in flax, then remove from heat and let stand 5 minutes. Puree sauce with emersion blender (or food processor) until smooth.
      3. Place beans and 1 ½ cups sauce in bowl; stir to blend. Pour beans into nonstick 9-inch square baking dish. Drizzle with honey; bake 10–12 minutes or until dark and bubbling.
      4. Meanwhile, grill sausage10–12 minutes, turning often, until charred and 165°F. Serve sausage with baked beans and remaining sauce on the side.
