Tea Parties Grow Up

Tea Parties Grow UpThey're not just for little girls anymore. Adults put a sophisticated spin on these social gatherings by pairing organic teas with savory and sweet snacks.

Whether contemporary and casual or traditional and elegant, tea parties have become a popular way to celebrate special occasions.

"Currently, there is a trend of having afternoon tea as a way of relaxing and socializing with friends," says Jeanne Lord, owner of the Faded Rose Tea Garden in Chamblee, Georgia. "We have a lot of birthday celebrations and bridal and baby showers as tea parties."

When you serve organic teas and natural snacks, you show your guests that your party was brewed with care.

STEEPED IN HEALTH
You can feel good about serving organic tea. It's brimming with antioxidants that may help fight cancer and heart disease. And organic growers rely on natural substances such as compost for nutrients and ground cover. Weeds and insects are controlled by earth-friendly methods, such as crop rotation, mulching and pest-controlling spiders.

When shopping for organic brands, such as Celestial Seasonings Organic Black, Green or Vanilla Apple White teas, look for the USDA "Organic" seal on the package. It tells you the tea was grown without using most conventional pesticides and petroleum-based fertilizers.

HOSTESS GUIDE
Planning a party? Here are some tips that may suit you to a "tea":
  • Send out invitations on recycled paper. Better yet, send electronic invitations. Evite.com has a small but fun selection of tea party designs.
  • Serve several varieties of tea. Include a strong black, a fragrant green and a subtle white as well as some herbal or flavored varieties. For something spicier, brew up some Tazo Chai Organic Spiced Black Tea. On hot days offer some refreshing iced teas.
  • Plan a menu that includes both savory and sweet items. For savory items set out nuts, shrimp with an herbed dipping sauce and thin tea sandwiches made with whole grain bread. For sandwich fillings choose organic veggies or chicken salad made using chunks of Publix GreenWise Market Chicken. For sweets serve cookies, muffins or quick breads. If you prefer to bake your own treats, check out last month's issue of this magazine for recipes using organic and natural ingredients (now available online at publix.com/greenwise).
  • Add a few special touches that reflect seasonal and local foods. For example, Jeanne Lord hosts many peach- and pecan-themed events celebrating foods that are native to her Georgia locale.
"Tea is a special occasion because of the care and the preparation and the ritual that goes into it," says Tracy Stern, author of Tea Party: 20 Themed Tea Parties with Recipes for Every Occasion (Clarkson Potter, 2007). "Your guests will know that you went the extra mile for them." Raise your cup in a salute to happy sipping.
