We take pride in supporting our neighbors in our communities. And we’re committed to helping our local businesses thrive and our local charities do more good.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, we have purchased more than 25 million pounds of fresh produce and over 500,000 gallons of milk directly from farmers to donate to Feeding America® member food banks in the Southeast. And those numbers continue to grow.

Publix responds to urgent need at Florida food banks.

Publix donates nearly 1.3 million pounds of food to meet holiday demand.

LAKELAND, Fla., Dec. 15, 2020 — As people across Florida face food insecurity at unprecedented levels, Publix today announced a new six-week program to support six of the state’s largest food banks with donations of pasta, canned vegetables, canned beans, cereal and boxed potatoes. The six participating Feeding America member food banks collectively serve 46 counties in Florida and include:

  • Feeding Northeast Florida, serving the Jacksonville metro area
  • Feeding South Florida, serving the Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Monroe areas
  • Feeding Tampa Bay, serving the Tampa metro area
  • Harry Chapin Food Bank, serving the Fort Myers metro area
  • Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, serving the Orlando metro area
  • Treasure Coast Food Bank, serving the Fort Pierce-Port St. Lucie metro area

Food banks are in need with some reporting as much as a 300 to 400% increase in demand. As we approach the holidays, more than 2.7 million people in Florida — 1 in 8 — are struggling with hunger.

“When we heard from food banks that they were facing a critical food shortage, we knew that, as a food retailer, we had another opportunity to help,” said Publix CEO Todd Jones. “With 90 years of relationships and expertise, we are able to mobilize quickly — sourcing, purchasing and transporting what these food banks need most — and bring hope and nourishment this holiday season.”

Publix expands its initiative to support farmers and families.

LAKELAND, Fla., July 8, 2020 — Publix is excited to share that its initiative to support farmers and families across the Southeast has reached a new milestone. Two and a half months after launching, more than 5 million pounds of produce and 350,000 gallons of milk have been purchased and donated to Feeding America® member food banks throughout the company’s operating area.

The program has also expanded to support farmers in other states as the growing season moves north. In addition to purchasing produce from Florida farmers, Publix is now buying produce from farmers in Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina and will add farmers from Tennessee and Virginia in the coming weeks.

“During these challenging times, we remain committed to working together to find the solutions that positively impact our communities in need. We are honored to continue our support of Feeding America member food banks and to purchase produce and milk from farmers across the Southeast,” said Publix CEO Todd Jones. “As the harvest season moves north, so is our initiative, expanding to support additional farmers and serve as many people as possible.”

Publix reaches milestone in its initiative to support farmers and families.

LAKELAND, Fla., May 6, 2020 — Publix’s initiative to support farmers and families reached a milestone as the company announced buying more than 1 million pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables and more than 100,000 gallons of milk in its first two weeks to donate to Feeding America member food banks.

“We’re proud of the success this initiative has had in supporting farmers and families affected by the pandemic,” said Publix CEO Todd Jones. “As a food retailer, feeding families is our greatest opportunity to give back, and we are grateful to be able to do so while supporting produce and dairy farmers. During such challenging times, we are even more committed to supporting those in need and doing good, together.”

Launched on April 22, the initiative aims to help farmers and families struggling due to the coronavirus pandemic by purchasing fruits, vegetables and milk from Florida produce farmers and southeastern dairies. Publix donates this food directly to Feeding America member food banks, serving 283 counties, throughout the company’s seven-state operating area.

Feeding America estimates an additional 17 million people will experience food insecurity due to the pandemic, many of whom are turning to Feeding America member food banks to put food on their tables. At the same time, farmers are feeling the effects of an unexpected decrease in demand, and some are being forced to discard produce and milk due to the closures of schools, restaurants and other establishments.

Publix launches new initiative to support farmers and families.

Supporting our farmers. Feeding those in need.

LAKELAND, Fla., April 22, 2020 — Restaurant, hotel, and school closings have affected Florida’s produce farmers and southeastern dairies, resulting in good food going to waste. At the same time, Feeding America estimates 17.1 million people will experience food insecurity due to school closures and rising unemployment in the coming months.

For Publix, the solution was simple: Bring together farmers, food banks, and families in need. So we did.

Publix began an initiative to purchase produce and milk directly from farmers, and donate it to Feeding America® member food banks in our communities. The initiative is expected to run for several weeks; we’ll donate 150,000 pounds of produce and 43,500 gallons of milk in the first week alone.

“In addition to providing much-needed produce and milk to food banks, this initiative provides financial support to farmers during this challenging time,” said Publix CEO Todd Jones. “We’re honored to be able to work with these groups and do good together for our communities.”
