Recall of Pet Foods Manufactured by Menu Foods, Inc.

LAKELAND, Fla., March 19, 2007 — Menu Foods, Inc. is recalling "cuts and gravy" style dog and cat food produced between December 3, 2006 and March 6, 2007.  The recall was prompted by consumer complaints and reported instances of cats and dogs that developed kidney failure after eating the affected product.  In order to better respond to customers, Menu Foods has enhanced the its website focused on the recall (http://www.menufoods.com/recall/). 

In response to the recent Menu Foods, Inc. recall of wet pet foods, Publix Super Markets Inc. is participating in the voluntary recall of products impacted on specific brands and product sizes involving 3 oz., 5.5 oz, 13.2 oz, 22 oz. canned and 5.3 oz., 5.5 oz. foil pouches of cat and dog pet food products manufactured by Menu Foods.  This voluntary recall is part of a larger recall by Menu Foods Inc., a contract manufacturer that makes canned and pouch pet food products under a variety of branded pet food labels which include numerous retailer specific labels such as the Publix branded products. There have been a small number of reported cases involving cats in the US (none in Canada) becoming sick and developing signs of kidney failure. The signs of kidney problems are loss of appetite, vomiting and lethargy.

These products have a "Best If Used By Date" of 12/10/2009 - 3/6/2010 for specific varieties of Publix Brand Dog Food canned products. This date can be located on the bottom of the cans.  The Iams Brand products affected have the lot codes 6339 through 7073 followed by the plant code 4197.  These lot codes can be located on the bottom of canned product or the back side of the foil pouches near the bottom corner.  The Mighty Dog brand product we stock that is impacted by this recall is a 12 ct. Variety pack of 5.5 oz. foil pouches with code dates of 6337 through 7073, followed by the plant code 1798. Please note that there are no issues with Dry Dog or Dry Cat food products for any brand, these products are not produced by Menu Foods.

This voluntary product recall involves discontinuation of sales and product retrieval from our stores and our consumers.  Customers should return all the affected products immediately and consult with a veterinarian if any symptoms are present in their pets. Consumers will be refunded the purchase price for any products returned based on this recall.

Publix is taking this precautionary and proactive step, because we care about the health and well being of our customers and their pets.  Menu Foods is conducting testing to confirm the exact cause and nature of this illness in conjunction with the FDA. To date there have been no confirmed instances of illness associated with products sold at Publix.
