Publix Launches Nutrition Information Program
LAKELAND, Fla., March 5, 2007 — Publix Super Markets has launched a nutrition information program, highlighting healthy food choices displayed on tags under the products at each store location. The program is designed to help consumers make informed food selections quickly in the grocery, dairy and frozen food aisles.
The shelf tags include practical and easy-to-read nutrition information. The nutrition labels are based on the U.S. government's Dietary Guidelines as well as criteria set by the Food and Drug Administration. Publix enlisted a panel of nutrition experts to help develop the nutrition information program. In addition to the nutrition information, the carbohydrate count will be featured on the tag of each highlighted product.
"This program should easily fit into customers' food choices and meal plans. It takes the confusion out of reading nutrition labels and saves consumers time spent reading each label at the store. Customers who are on special diets can use the tags to help shop for products that meet their needs," says Publix Director of Consumer Relations Leslie Spencer.
The tags indicate the better choice for each type of product, including snacks.
"Publix acknowledges that customers want to occasionally eat certain types of foods that are not part of their daily diet. Variety and moderation are still the keys to eating healthy."
